Surrealism:
This art form of unusual, occasionally visually disturbing pieces came to light in the 1910’s and early 1920’s and its main goal is to express the unconscious imagination. Andre Breton’s Manifesto of Surrealism was what actually started the movement. Louis Aragon, a French poet along with others, and Breton, who was a psychiatrist, got their ideas from Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx(Heilbrunn Timeline of Art History).The ideas of “juxtaposition”, which is rearranging objects, such as putting an eye where the nose would go and putting the nose where the eye would go on a face, and overall bizarre effect, such as in “The persistence of Memory” the melted clocks are strange looking.(Surrealism)
